Controller
Location: Irvine, California
Scope: US parent + German subsidiary. Multi-entity, multi-currency.
Role
Own global accounting and reporting. Deliver a fast, accurate close and consolidated statements. Build controls, manage audits, and keep Kardion compliant in the US and Germany. Lead the team and modernize processes and systems to support scale.
Responsibilities
- Close & consolidation: Run month-end and quarter-end close within 5 business days. Prepare US GAAP consolidations, eliminations, and FX remeasurement/translation.
- Financial reporting: Issue income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, and management reporting with variance analysis.
- Policies & controls: Author and enforce accounting policies. Design a SOX-lite control environment suited to a scale-up.
- Compliance — United States: US GAAP; revenue (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842), stock-based comp (ASC 718). Coordinate federal and state income/franchise filings with advisors; sales/use tax; payroll taxes (FICA/FUTA); 1099 information returns.
- Compliance — Germany: Statutory accounts under HGB; VAT/Umsatzsteuer returns and EC Sales Listings; payroll/Lohnsteuer and social security; Körperschaftsteuer and Gewerbesteuer coordination with local advisors.
- Intercompany & transfer pricing: Maintain TP policy, intercompany agreements, and settlements; ensure documentation supports tax positions.
- Treasury & cash: 13-week cash forecast, working-capital optimization, banking oversight, FX exposure management, and hedge coordination where appropriate.
- Audit & external advisors: Lead year-end US group audit and German statutory audit. Manage tax and payroll vendors.
- Systems & process: Own ERP and close tech stack. Drive automation, data quality, and workflow standards across entities.
- Business partnership: Provide timely insights to the CFO and leadership. Support budgeting, forecasting, and board materials.
- Bachelors in accounting or finance. CPA strongly preferred. IFRS familiarity a plus.
- 8–12+ years progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years leading teams.
- Proven multi-entity consolidation under US GAAP; exposure to German statutory reporting (HGB).
- Hands-on with revenue, leases, equity, and FX. Transfer pricing experience required.
- Tools: NetSuite or similar ERP; advanced Excel; BI familiarity. Experience with DATEV/SAP in Germany is a plus.
- Clear, concise communicator. Builds durable processes in a high-change environment.
- Close in ≤5 business days within first 90 days.
- First-year unqualified audit opinion for group and Germany.
- Documented TP policy and intercompany settlement cadence.
- Cash forecast accuracy within ±5% on a rolling 13-week view.
- Control framework documented and operating, with key controls tested.
Work Environment & Travel Expectations
Location: U.S. Irvine office
Travel: Up to 20% domestic and international
Physical Demands: Regular use of keyboard/computer and office activities; occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication in English are required.
